IPL - Pigmentation
If you ask most people what they would most like to improve about their skin, the answer will usually involve making the skin tone more even, clearing the complexion of flaws and imperfections. The ideal look for naturally healthy skin is a clear radiant even skin tone. When the skin is clear of blemishes it projects a natural healthy radiance.
Skin pigmentation can take the form of freckles, age spots or larger patches of discoloured skin. The most common form is hyperpigmentation, which is the excess production of the skin pigment melanin, appearing as localised patches, which are darker than the surrounding skin. The patches are typically non-raised, as the hyperpigmentation occurs beneath the top layer of skin.
Pigmentation can be caused by excess sun exposure, injury, post-inflammation/acne or hormonal changes. IPL treatment can help to reduce the appearance of many forms of pigmentation.
IPL can improve the appearance of:
- Darker patches
- Freckles
- Age Spots / Lentigines
- Sun spots
- Some brown birthmarks
- Marks left from scars

IPL – Pigmentation FAQ’s
How does it work?
Intense Pulsed Light systems differ from lasers in that they can deliver hundreds of wavelengths (or colours) in each burst of light. Certain filters are used that target these flashes of light so that they work in a similar way to lasers causing heat damage to the particular skin problem.
What Can I Expect In Treatment?
Skin is thoroughly cleansed and then the IPL hand-piece is passed over the skin, working through a section at a time. You may feel some slight discomfort while the treatment is being carried out.
Are There Any Side Effects?
The area may swell slightly and feel hot (like a sunburn) for a while after IPLtreatment, and it might be red and swollen for the rest of the day. Occasionally scabs may form on the treated area, which will fall off in time. Brown spots can become darker within a day, they will fade over about 12 to 18 days.
How Many Treatments Would I Need?
Depending on the severity and type of pigmentation a single session may yield the desired results, however it can take up to 6 sessions.
What Results Can I Expect To See?
Everyone heals at various rates depending on the depth of treatment, the particular areas treated and your own health and condition. Noticeable results are typically seen in a few weeks and darker or pigmented patches will be noticeably lighter or completely removed.
