Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to improve the appearance of thread veins and spider veins or to eliminate them completely. It’s quick, painless and effective.
Thread veins are little blue, purple or red veins that are visible just underneath the skin. Although harmless, thread veins can be very unsightly and they may make you feel self-conscious – particularly if they appear in exposed areas, such as the legs. That’s why sclerotherapy is becoming an increasingly popular option.
WHAT CAUSES THREAD VEINS ON THE LEGS?
Although the exact cause is unknown, there could many reasons why they appear – such as hereditary factors, heat, alcohol and hormonal changes. These are all believed to be triggers for this skin condition, but that doesn’t mean that they cannot be treated.
WHAT IS INJECTED DURING SCLEROTHERAPY?
Sclerotherapy is a safe, non-surgical procedure which involves injecting a saline treatment directly into the vein. The treatment has been well practised and has evolved over the last 150 years to ensure the best possible results for those with thread veins. It’s quick, easy, virtually painless – with no need for topical anaesthetic. Recovery time is minimal and the sclerotherapy injections create impressive results, which last a long time.

No, the procedure is virtually painless. Usually only the very tip of the needle is inserted into the skin, whilst this can be experienced as a tiny scratch, it should not be more painful than plucking hair.
Immediately and will carry on to improve over 8 weeks.
A chemical solution or Sclerosing agent is injected at several points along the veins. The solution or Sclerosing agent is injected through a very fine needle, directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the veins which causes the vein walls to collapse, forcing the blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades over a period of 2-8 weeks and the appearance is significantly improved – resulting in much clearer, vein-free skin.
Following the injections, it is important that veins stay in a collapsed state, therefore cotton balls and a compression wrap may be applied to promote proper healing and help assist shrinkage of the veins. After your treatment you will be required to wear compression tights for at least three days. These tights will not need to be worn overnight, apart from that; your daily activities can be resumed after treatment like normal.
The number of veins injected in one treatment session depends on the size and location of the veins, therefore this treatment can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how many injections are needed.
The number of sessions required for maximum results will depend on a variety of factors, such as; the thickness of the veins, the length of the veins, the individuals’ age and health. You will be advised on the number of sessions needed during your free Sclerotherapy consultation.
This treatment is the perfect solution to many people who suffer with thread veins, however Sclerotherapy is not suitable for people with large varicose veins, or those who have had veins removed via surgery before.
